    Humility- 1 Peter 5:5-7
We launch into our series on the virtues of Christ by looking at humility, which is what most writers of the Christian classics labels as the root of all other virtues.  Think about it.  You can invest and put effort into all the other character qualities, but without humility it will send you in the wrong direction.  Humility is not thinking less of yourself.  It is thinking of yourself less.  So where should your thoughts go?  That's the subject of today's message.

    Exercising Godliness- 1 Timothy 4:7-8
If you've ever learned a skill, you know that it takes effort.  If you've ever tried to change a pattern of behavior, you know that it takes effort.  So why, when it comes to our spiritual walk, do we often stop at the threshold of grace, hoping for things to change, longing to be more like Jesus, but don't begin to put in near the effort as we do in other life endeavors?  Grace is opposed to earning, but not to effort.  We are called to "exercise towards godliness."  That means we are not finished yet, we are not complete.  There is still some assembly required.

    O Holy Night- Redemptive Worship
A priest, an atheist and a Jewish composer 'walk into a bar'... and out comes one of the most beautiful and beloved Christmas Carols of all time.  However, it almost didn't survive, at least there were those that wanted to remove the song from the Church forever because of who wrote it.  The song was redeemed and has stood the test of time.  Its theme of redemption, that in the message of Christmas our "Souls feel their worth," reminds us that the theme of human history is redemption, God redeeming the world through Christ.  We are then called to "redeem" the time, to make the most of every opportunity to be a channel of love, a message truth, and light in the darkness.

    Silent Night- Simplicity in Worship
Born out of necessity, as the organ in a small Austrian church was broken on Christmas Eve, the simplicity of this most beloved Christmas Carol has captured the hearts of millions around the world for 200 years. Simplicity is not only beautiful, it is often essential.  What gets in the way of placing Jesus at the top of the priority list?  Sometimes we complicate life even with the best of things and intentions, but they distract us away from what is most important.  This song encourages us to keep it simple.

Hark, the Herald Angels Sing- Worship in Truth
Charles Wesley, alongside of his brother John, were the founders of Methodism and an emphasis on bringing the Word of God to life to produce holiness in the life of believers.  Wesley's ability to take the Scriptures and poetically set them to meters that could be sung is only outdone by his ability to succinctly encapsulate the depth of truth that his hymns speak of.  Hark the Herald Angels Sing is a treasure trove of theology packaged in a beloved Christmas Carol that reminds us of the truth we rehearse as we worship.

Joy to the World- A call to authentic worship
"Joy to the World!"  This song was written with no thought to Christmas. So how did it become such a beloved Christmas classic?  Who wrote it?  Why? And what can we learn from its original intention?
